BCS

Four writers over at College Football News were asked to answer and defend the question of right now, do you rank the Mountain West over the Pac-10. Clearly this question is not related to Boise State, but the Broncos and the WAC should be in the conversation. Simply put, after the first 4 weeks of play in 2008, the better question would be are Non-BCS teams closing the gap against BCS teams? Going into this season in only three BCS games, Non-BCS teams held a 2-1 advantage, however in the 69 games played in 2008 Non-BCS team have come away with only 17 victories. Of course the WAC has not represented Non-BCS teams very well, accounting for a 3-14 record, with three more BCS Non conference games to play. Clearly, Non-BCS teams have a ways to go. It should be noted  Mountain West’s success against Non-BCS schools is truly remarkable, going winning 7 out of 9 games. With 3 Non conference BCS games left to play, the MTN already has winning record against BCS schools.

Clearly the cream of the crop of Non-BCS teams are separating themselves. Boise State, BYU, Utah, TCU, Fresno State and East Carolina are a few that have closed the gap the most. These teams arguably represent the best that Non-BCS teams have to offer. However, Steve Silverman stated in the CFN article

“Put the best from each conference on the field and it would be a rout.”

This statement hit the nail on the head, despite the effort of our beloved Broncos and others these past 4 weeks, most would agree Non-BCS teams have only begun to scratch away the gap between Non-BCS and BCS teams. However, I can’t help wondering how well this years Top BCS teams would do against the likes of BYU or Boise State. Unfortunately, teams like Boise State get a rare, once a season chance to find out.
