Bloggers’ Legitimacy Takes One on the Chin

Since I started blogging and podcasting about Boise State three years ago, I have had a goal of being on equal footing with the local media. I have sent several emails to Boise State Athletics requesting media credentials and have been sent back denials in return. After Friday’s events, it seems that the likelihood of achieving that goal has taken a giant leap backwards.

At the end of the day what separates myself and fellow bloggers (Drew, Buck & Kevan) from established media, is legitimacy. I strive to provide content that differentiates this site from the rest, I do so without any approval from Boise State. I do however strive to meet a standard that in the end makes this site as legitimate as the local media. I concede the fact, I have zero background in journalism and may not have the best sentence structure. I do however have a passion for Boise State, podcast ninja skills, and couple of bucks to purchase a domain name and hosting. At the same time it doesn’t mean I will ever go off the deep end and conjure up rumors as one Sparty and Friends did this past Friday.

You see Sparty any credibility you may have had was just thrown out the window. Additionally, you made bloggers like myself look bad and leave us extremely frustrated in the process. To make matters worse, you offer the likes of Brian Murphy plenty of pooh to fling at bloggers. Even KTIK’s Jeff Caves and Mike Prater were able to take shots at bloggers on Idaho Sports Talk.

So why did Sparty light the Internet a buzz? It boiled down to publicity. Yes I know it is hard to believe, but its true. Everyone wants to be the first to report the story, so they can claim the title of the one who broke it. If that means reporting a story with little confirmation, then so be it. Schools like Boise State have little to zero control over bloggers and message boards. They do however, have the ability to manage the local media. In the same breath, Chad Cripe, like other beat writers, he has his newspaper’s reputation to uphold. Reporting a story that hasn’t met a set of standards would leave newspapers like the Idaho Statesman in a bad spot, a spot I myself wish to avoid.

As I continue to build this site’s legitimacy, I promise never to take the road traveled by bloggers like Sparty and Friends. Though from time to time I receive tidbits that I could quite easily write about, typically as a rule of thumb they are kept under lock and key until other outlets report them. As Bronco Nation N.O.W continues to grow, I take solace in knowing I have done things right, to the best of my ability, and with enjoyment.

Wow. You took down my comment. Shocking. What was it exactly that upset you? I'm thinking it was the logical argument. Yeah, that was probably it.

knightro  on December 7th, 2008

I think that in an effort to differentiate themselves from other blogs is they censor reader comments. Sparty may be right or wrong, but at least he had the balls to not censor those who chose to argue against him.

mikey  on December 7th, 2008

i guess that when chris mortensen and kirk herbsterits sources dont pan out that that makes their legitimacy take a hit as well.

it is quite amusing that you call out another blogs legitimacy and then censure their rebuttal though

Curious to see if this comment remains up…

@ mikey – want some irony? To the right at the bottom of the Comments section it says "Comments by IntenseDebate". How can you have "intense debate" if dissenting opinions are removed from the comments.

This site claims legitimacy. The author says (s)he reports what others have already reported. I guess via the transitive property that, if one re-reports a legitiimate news story, the re-report is legitimate too. So the author is striving for legitimacy. But that makes his/her blogging more like a grade school book report…summarizing someone else's work. I guess that (s)he is saying if you want breaking news, go somewhere else. However, if you want a possibly clever rehash of news, then (s)he is happy to provide it. (S)he has a goal of "being on equal footing with the local media". Does the local media "keep tidbits under lock and key" and wait for the national media to report a story and then re-report it? No. They are a news reporting agency. They do the work to uncover the news and then report it. Unless (s)he takes the initiative to discover news and report it, (s)he will never be on equal footing with the local media.

And I'm sure the local media knows the correct spelling of "conjure".

I am a writer for S&F and should tell you that the story was not made up for publicity at all. Sparty had a source that was close to MSU and had the information and said it was solid. Don't say it was just made up. We have grown a reputation for getting SEC coaching rumors correct in the past few weeks by being first on the Lane Kiffin to UT and the Tommy Tubberville stepping down from Auburn stories. That's why people believed us.

I should also point out to you that there is no proof that our story is incorrect. MSU has not named their coach and college coaches have gone when they said they wouldn't before. Let's not forget that members of the Boise media said that they were hearing the same story at the same time including a 4 year 9 million dollar contract that our source did not have. Perhaps people were being fed incorrect information.

The fact that our story forced Petersen to come out and deny it should tell you something. He has been connected to many coaching vacancies as of late and has not felt the need to denounce them, yet he did feel the need when it came from our blog. Logic would dictate that there was either something to the story or that our blog is somehow extremely mainstream and reliable. Since I doubt that the latter is the case, I would say that there was a foundation for the story.

Many outlets reported that Petersen met with the MSU athletic director in Denver this week. We all know the two worked together at Oregon. You don't think he might rather take a job in the SEC where an undefeated record can actually earn a spot in the national title game unlike at Boise where it likely gets you the Ponsietta Bowl this year? That's not a possibility? What about the fact that he may want a challenge? It's not like the WAC puts up a fight unless somebody has Colt Brennan.

In short, you are wrong and we want an apology. Actually, you're just wrong. Scratch the apology. We're better than that. Did I say better than that? I meant better than you. My bad. I mean, just look at all the hits we got, right? Isn't that what it's all about?

(Get it? I was making fun of your insinuation that we did it for the hits. I hope you get it.)

Guyinthecorner, I wrote the article late last night and posted it. Just this moment I see comments on the post. If your comment was deleted or does not appear I am truly sorry for that. I take the punches along with the good. As one comment stated I cannot claim legitimacy if I am censoring opinion. Thank You for your comments.

I receive an email for each post, here is your comment in full, once again sorry for the issue.

A definition of a blog.

A blog (a contraction of the term "Web log") is a Web site, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Many blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject; others function as more personal online diaries.

This blog aims to provide commentary simply do the the lack of resources and time. I call out Sparty because he reported something that was totally false and all Boise State gets from this is a blog started another rumor that caused a problem. As a blogger I get lumped in with that thought. The equal footing I am looking for is to be able to record audio of pre game and post game news conferences and be able to have access to players. This will only add to my podcast and when I walk a line to show Boise State I am not a rumor mill it kills me when a blog posts something like it did and Coach Pete is forced to to issue a statement.

P.S. Thanks for catching my spelling error.

mikeychx  on December 7th, 2008

what sparty reported has not yet been proven totally false….until MSU has a head coach not named chris petersen this report is not been proven false

bronconationnow  on December 7th, 2008

I assure you when Coach Pete says he isn't going to MSU, he means it. Those of us that follow this program on a daily basis know you can take what Coach Pete to the Bank.

Umm…. no. What exactly did I type that didn't make sense? We were right with our sources for Kiffin and Tubberville and had reason to believe that a source was right for this story. We didn't make it up for the hits as was said by the author. And the fact that we haven been proven wrong yet is pretty obvious. MSU doesn't have a coach yet so we don't know either way. And Petersen wouldn't be the first guy to leave after he said he wouldn't especially after the current rumor that the offer has been upped to 4 years and 10 million.

Jack  on December 8th, 2008

That's pretty funny guy in the corner. You obviously thought there was some truth to the story and jumped on it in your haste to be the FIRST to report it…………it turns out to be false, then instead of apologizing you write that big response to rationalize your irresponsibility………Nice.

MikeTransplant  on December 9th, 2008

I know that this may sound arrogant but Boise State fans think that if we we to join the MWC that would only help push the conference close to achiving full-time status in the Bull Crap Series (stolen from a sign in our stands vs. Fresno). I agree. Isn't JerrahJones (I forgot what Randy Galloway- a very funny guy in my opinion- calls him) building some sort of TerrorDome 'round y'alls neck of the woods? Doesn't he want to play the Cotton Bowl there? Doesn't he want the Cotton Bowl to be part of the BCS?

"Do you smell what the Rock is cookin?!"

The only thing keeping us out of the MWC is the MWC. There aren't too many Boise State fans who don't want to go the MWC (and it's awful TV contract- memo to the MWC: gotta fix that). The others think BSU belongs in the PAC-10 (fatfreakingchance).

continued….

Sam  on December 9th, 2008

The Cotton Bowl folks are desperate to get into the cartel. (I mean, who wouldn't want the chance akin to paying 3 loss VT and 2 loss Cinncy $20 to suck in front of a national TV audience of seeral thousand!) But seriously, I think the chance is not unrealistic for the MWC, Boise and the Cotton Bowl to get this thing lined up. Our bowl always was, and frankly should still be, an elite bowl. What the heck Glendale Az. is doing with a major bowl I don't know. There weren't even people in Arizona when SouthWest Conference teams were winning national titles in the Cotton bowl. If TCU-Boise pulls better ratings on the 23rd than the Orange Bowl does a week later we may be moving in the right direction.

Sparty Interviewed about the Chris Petersen aftermath

Sam  on December 9th, 2008

OK Boise fans. Out here in Fort Worth we're wondering how realistic the possibility of BSU joining the MWC is? A lot of people are thinking this move would give the conference a real shot to get an automatic bid to the Bowl Cartel Series. I'm interested in Boise fans' take on this.

By the way, you would have to get rid of the turf so we can see you players. That really is cheating. How have you been getting away with it?

See you in SD!

MikeTransplant  on December 10th, 2008

continued from above…

SloberingLou, IamsmarterthaneveryoneintheroomandwatchingmeonTVMay, and the rest of the talking heads at the four-letter-network keep yelling at us to get into a better conference. Well DUH! Do you think we like kicking the crap out of teams like Idaho, Fresno, Utah State, New Mexico State, and the rest of the W(h)AC(k)? Well we do- but that's beside the point. We want to have a better schedule. We try to have a better schedule. It's not our fault that everyone else in the W(h)AC(k) blows. All we want is for an oppponent to play us in something akin to a home-and-home series. Is that too much to ask? We've had them with Oregon State and BYU in the past. Next year the UniversityofZero (the Nike Ducks) comes to the Blue. I think that a series with both Utah and BYU starts in 2010 and runs for at least 4 years.

OBTW- I think TCU purple would look lovely on the Blue. When y'all coming?
