Can I take a mulligan?

I recently wrote an article questioning the “mental health” of a BSU athlete. I have since spoke with that Athlete and I hope the air has been cleared. In the conclusion of the article I did make a note that I hope I overreacted to a Facebook comment. It would appear I did just that.

I thought with this particular post I was close to, but not over the top. Part of the article was a knee-jerk reaction to comments made by the BSU Athlete that insulted the city that I live in. That reaction and subsequent article may have been something that cost me some respectability among the Bronco Nation faithful.

I try very hard not to cross the line, but it would appear from the feedback I have received, I pushed this issue over the edge. Please accept my apology and I promise I will seek feedback to articles I believe push the edge from my fellow peers, in the future. Please allow me this mulligan and trust I wish no ill will towards past, present or future Bronco Players.

The article has been deleted and buried.

Thank You

JT Ray.

Bronco Nation N.O.W

It has a been a great year to be part of Bronco Nation.  After a strange transition and establishing this site, I can say I could not have asked for more this year.  During the year the site had a wide array of visitors.  The biggest swell being during the week before and during the Oregon game.   Not to say the site was without Bronco visitors as Bronco Nation received Bronco Nation N.O.W. with open arms.

The Bronco Nation Podcast once again grew its subscriber base.  I of course could not take full credit as Buck Rogers and Drew Roberts brought that little something extra to the show.  I also expanded the list of guest to include actual former Broncos and opposing school guests.

As Bronco Nation N.O.W. heads into its second year I want to let you know of some minor changes and solicit reader input.  Back when I was with BroncoNation.net I found myself constantly working on site design and less on bringing more content.

With Bronco Nation N.O.W. things changed quite a bit as I put together a simple web design with a little of the hold overs.  As the year progressed design wise I have made little modifications, other than some information in the side bar and a new logo.  This past Sunday I one more logo change, which is a simpler design.  Podcast listeners will get access to new Bronco Nation Podcast Album Art.  Sometimes it is the simple things in life that you enjoy. These logos come courtesy of a Bronco Country Poster, GhostTown56.

Content wise Lace Banacheck has joined the Bronco Nation N.O.W. blog team.  He has written quite a bit of articles. I hope to continue to add writers as the site grows, but alas I lack funds to pay anybody.  However, I welcome anybody, who wishes to write for this site an open invitation.  If you would like to join the BNN team just simply send me an email to questions@bronconationnow.com and I will get you set up.

I also added twitter to the site, allowing subscribers to be alerted when a post is made to the site. To follow BNN on twitter, simply follow us at http://twitter.com/BroncoNationNOW. In addition, many thanks to the sites’ sponsor, The Blue and Orange Store, which provided Bronco Nations fans a way to save on Bronco Gear on their website.

I am also thinking about changing up the Podcast format to shorten the show in half.  One show to talk about the previous week’s game and a show to focus on the upcoming game.  I am also looking into doing a weekly WAC and College Football recap show.  With that said below is a poll give me a little feedback on these ideas.

Finally, I am looking into doing a weekend call-in show.  A Post Post-Game show.  The idea of having fans sound off the day after.  I typically can’t wait to talk Bronco Football the Monday after a game and get all the feedback from everyone.  So here is another poll to give me feedback, would like to have an Internet live show.  A fan free for all sort of speak.

Thanks for all the views and here is to another great Bronco Football Season, I hope to continue to build on the success of the site and bring Bronco Nation more and more content. Go Broncos!!!

Giving Up My Boise State Football Tickets

By now just about every Bronco Nation Season Ticket holder has voiced their collective opinion about the recent season ticket increase and the added BAA Membership fees for sections 5, 25, 26, 105, 111, 125 & 126. The increase for a season ticket in my section is $105.00 after shipping and handling, a 36.46% increase. It should be noted that the increase is really a 13.58% as last year there were only 5 games instead of the 6 this year.

On top of the increase in ticket price, the section I am currently located in will be charged a $140 Priority Fee for 2 seats. The end result is a 23.70% increase for one ticket in the Priority Section. One simply needs to ask themselves if the price is worth the quality of product being provided to Bronco Nation.

A great deal of Bronco Fans would say the price is not an issue for the privilege to watch the Broncos Play on the Blue. After all the Boise State Broncos are with out a doubt one of the best tickets in town, in Idaho and in the West. broncostadium-250x168Mainly due to the supply, I would say it is one of the toughest tickets to secure. I am sure getting a ticket to a Boise State game rivals that of gaining access to Oregon Ducks, Utah Utes, BYU Cougars and USC Trojans games.

On the other side I am sure there are Bronco Fans that think prices continue to rise and the best opponents the Broncos have seen in the last 7 years are the Oregon State Beavers and in 2009 the Oregon Ducks. Each year we are treated to FCS division push over and a non-BCS mid-tier team. Then of course their is the WAC, which the Broncos have dominated since becoming members of the Conference.

With that said I should pause and let you know that I am giving up my season tickets this year, not because I can no longer afford them, but for a whole host of reasons.

  • The first simply boils down to the quality of opponent. This is all on Gene Bleymaier. Over the past few years the highest quality of opponent the Broncos have faced are the Georgia Bulldogs and that was a road game disaster. The best oponent on the blue, the 2009 game versus the Oregon Ducks.  I am not suggesting that Gene needs to get BCS teams into Bronco Stadium, but I am suggesting that UC Davis is not the quality of opponent that Bronco Fans wish to spend time watching.
  • Next is the stadium sky box is a great addition, Boise State needs to add more seats to the stadium. Going back to my first point, BCS teams have enough to worry about financially, let alone having worry about whether BSU can deliver the amount of money they can get when playing an FCS team at home. With expansion comes more revenue. Getting $70 a head for 50,000 seats is much better than 32,000 a game, a $1.26 million better.
  • With expansion comes a little more leg room. As one comment I read,

“My wife is literally sitting on my lap during the game as there not enough room for the seats that are sold.”

I have two words for you, Bronco Cushions. These seats are taking up way too much room. I have witnessed, on several occasions, people bringing in wrenches to move the seats. On top of that people who want to save a buck or two bring their own seats in and they typically take up more space then the Bronco Cushions.

  • Speaking of space, what is the deal with parking? Could they have put in a parking garage next to Bronco Stadium by now? Parking has gotten so bad that most lots are charging $10 a spot and those spots are usually 6 to 7 blocks from the stadium. Oh and the prices people pay to park in the stadium parking lot is beyond reasonable, but more power to those who do.
  • Setting expansion aside for a moment Bronco Stadium is in major need of a rehab.  If your on the east side you know exactly what I am talking about.  Also could we get a sound system people can actually hear and understand.  Just a piece of advice, the greater number of fans are east and west, not north and south.  Anybody who has been to a concert know that the sound quality much better if your in line with the speakers, not to the side of the speakers.  Finally could we replace the light bulbs on the west side score board?
  • Finally, the “bandwagon” and uneducated fan has been more than I can handle. During the last game I was grabbed by another fan as I walked down to get a jump on the getting on the field to celebrate the WAC Championship. This fan had the nerve to say I wasn’t a “real fan”. Assuming I was just leaving, this person took it upon herself to call me a few choice words, dig her finger nails into my arm and at the same time draw attention from other fans, who thought they should yell at me as well.  Security of course would not do anything about it, as they did not witness the altercation.

The increase of ticket prices, though not a the main reason, has becoming the tipping point for me giving up my season tickets. I will continue to support the Broncos both as a fan, a podcaster, and monetarily, however Boise State Athletics has a long way to go in my opinion to keep fans coming back for more. There is no argument the football team is producing results and it is a top product. It goes without saying that Bronco Stadium and its amenities are still lacking. Looking past the sky box, Bronco Stadium is lacking all the things the big time programs have.  I feel that until these changes are made, I don’t care how much the price is, I am not buying as well as saving myself from the physical and verbal attacks.

An Oregon Win at Boise State Would Be Big

Oh how the times are changing.  It would appear many Ducks are setting their sights on a win over Boise State on the Blue. Funny just a year ago the Broncos were in the same role, looking to score a big win over the Oregon Ducks on the road.  Nick Daschel of Buster Sports claims this is the biggest opener for the Oregon Ducks since 2001 opener against Wisconsin.  He further states that this is the biggest road opener for the Ducks since 1999 against Michigan State.  Of course the Bronco’s haven’t lost a regular season home game since 2001, which was against Oregon’s fellow Pac-Ten Member, Washington State.  This game has lots of intrigue.

The stakes are enormous for both teams. If Oregon wins, it validates the Ducks as a team worthy of a top-10 ranking in 2009. If Oregon loses, it’s going to be an uphill climb to gain national respect. For Boise State, there is nothing close to the Ducks in terms of a marquee name on the 2009 schedule. If the Broncos win and look good doing it, they may get the jump on the Utah’s of the country in the race for a BCS at-large berth.

Oregon will have a new head coach, they will undoubtedly be looking for revenge and Mr. Daschel I am sure the Ducks would like deliver some hits on Kellen Moore.

Then there is the late hit by Boise State’s Ellis Powers on Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli on Sept. 20 that Duck fans can’t seem to let go.

No matter the stakes, I am sure both Bronco and Duck fans can’t wait for September to get here.
